Surrealism, psychedelia, and the escapism of sunset cityscapes; get lost in the transporting illustrations of Hand Jazz.
As part of our latest print series titled Rainbow of Hope, Evermade joined up with Hand Jazz once again, this time to create a rainbow-inspired print - with 100% of the profits going to NHS Charities Together. Scroll down to discover his original artwork, available for purchase now.
London-based, Ireland-raised illustrator Hand Jazz has a knack for creating images that you feel like you could live in. It’s a quality that mainly derives from his use of light and enviable environments. Sprawling modern spaces, soaked in relaxing rays, feature often in the artist's work, as do wobbly lined illusions, colourful spirographs, and psychedelic distortions. Hand Jazz is an artist who can masterfully toe the line between both these real and surreal inspirations - while always serving up a sensory spectacle to behold. If you miss walking the streets in the golden hour, this is your perfect lockdown supplement.
Before we all found ourselves home-bound, Hand Jazz regularly offered up his coveted prints at Brighton Illustration Fair and DIY Art Market, London. But this tantalising chance to browse just seems a little far off, so our latest collaboration with the artist is available to buy online now - along with a host of other printed treasures in his online shop. Surely, enough to tide any art-lover over until brighter days.
Who was on your playlist whilst working on this project?
I’ve recently been listening to an excellent playlist from London based music and culture output, Test Pressing. It might have played a part in the vibrant feeling of my work!
Who are some artists you really admire at the moment?
A recent standout for me has been Jeff Hamada, creator of global arts and culture platform Booooooom. He has helped artists navigate through tough times by providing helpful links to grants, free resources and educational materials for kids. Boooooom also opened up their private Slack community and made it free for everyone to join.
What are the positives you have come across during lockdown? How do you think it will change your point of view in the future?
The biggest positive for me has been staying in touch with family more regularly than normal. It’s something I hope will continue long after this is over.
What are you looking forward to most when the lockdown is over?
Definitely would be seeing family in person.
What’s your message to health workers right now?
Thank you really isn’t enough. It’s nothing less than a privilege to be able to shelter safely whilst so many others are risking their lives to save lives.
After chatting with Hand Jazz about his lockdown experience, we got the inside scoop on the meaning behind his latest artwork, Bright Time, for our new Rainbow of Hope project. "Many of the qualities of life in a city have been paused," the artist explained, "this time has allowed us to take stock of the things that mean most to us." “I wanted to capture the feeling of reflecting on what we are living through and looking ahead to brighter days.” Through an angular scene brimming with balmy brightness, Hand Jazz conveys the sunny moments that lie around the corner.
