Andrew Footit

Meet the Artist

When it comes to typography, font maestro Andrew Footit keeps it bold and experimental.

For our latest artwork series, Rainbow of Hope, we came together with Andrew to create a print that re-imagines the rainbow. You can purchase the final optimistic piece below - with 100% of profits being donated to NHS Charities Together.

London-based graphic designer Andrew Footit is forever refreshing his practice through unique, unconventional letterforms. By allowing room for risk, Footit has created types that range from fluid, ribbon characters to metallic, minimalist forms, to dramatic poster fonts with nail-biting kerning. So long as his characters stay clean, Footit is for exploring.

At Evermade, one of our all-time favourite Footit works is a futurist, circuit-board type featured in the tech issue of Entrepreneur Magazine last year. Although, it's hard to pick a front-runner from his seriously playful body of work. Even recently, the award-winning designer has been making our eyes pop with his iridescent finishes and new multicoloured, moving type series, Courage. (Which Andrew also released as a printable Colouring Page for anyone seeking some creative distraction during lockdown!) Across all these projects, Footit's graphic work is united by its jaw-dropping depth and 3D imagery. As a result of this distinctive style, the designer has built a client list including Billboard Magazine, ESPN, Empire Magazine, The Washington Post, and Ogilvy - all while developing his very own type foundry, Arkitype.

Although typography and identity design are Footit's bread and butter, as a self-taught designer with a wealth of illustrative flair, who knows what visual ventures Footit will tackle next. For now, at least, we're excited to say the designer has lent his talents to our Rainbow of Hope series - producing a print tailor-made for type-fanatics.

What’s in your art toolkit?

An HB and 2B pencil, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop :)

Who was on your playlist whilst working on this project?

I usually like to listen to SoundCloud mixes, it's great to find new artists that aren't mainstream yet.

Who are some artists you really admire at the moment?

Malika Favre, Studiofeixen, and Marta Cerda. All such amazing artists, designers that always produce incredible work to stare at and admire.

What are the positives you have come across during lockdown? How do you think it will change your point of view in the future?

Being content in doing simple things. We are always looking for the next adventure or busy all the time, lockdown has allowed us to slow down, enjoy family time, and think about what the real important things are in our lives.

What are you looking forward to most when the lockdown is over?

Having our family able to come visit would be so great.

What’s your message to health workers right now?

Thank you for all you do. Your work and bravery are admirable. Stay strong and stay safe.

For Footit's latest typographic creation - made in collaboration with Evermade - he's hidden an uplifting message in the very text itself. "The thinking for this piece was very literal and simple," Andrew elucidated when we caught up with him, "using the term Rainbow of Hope as inspiration, I wanted to create a colourful and fun execution of the word hope." "I also wanted to include a little link-up or "message" within the letters - so I connected the "o" and "p" with a heart."

Flowing, calligraphic, and entirely vibrant, Andrew's print titled Hope in the Heart is overflowing with patchwork patterns and a whole lot of heart.

For anyone looking to brush off some home decor cobwebs with brilliant colour, Hope in the Heart is available to buy below. Plus, all profits from your purchase will be donated straight to NHS Charities Together.
