D'Ara Nazaryan

Meet the artist

"Female-focused" and expressive, D'Ara Nazaryan's clean-lined illustrations capture the adventure of womanhood.

We've joined up with D'Ara for our latest print series, Rainbow of Hope, to create a piece inspired by the rainbow. Check out her limited edition print below - it's available for purchase now with 100% of the profits going to NHS Charities Together.

D'Ara Nazaryan is achieving something rare in our social media age - an artist aesthetic you can recognise instantly, before reading the Instagram caption. Crisp lines, warm tones, and simple, fluid forms are all signature touches for the Los-Angeles based illustrator, animator, and motion designer. But what really unites D'Ara's work is her celebratory portrayal of empowering female figures. Whether she's creating graphics for The Washington Post, The New York Times, Allure, or Medium, D'Ara is pushing for storytelling through a fun, but unapologetically female lens - and what an array of stories she has helped to narrate (!). Under lockdown alone, we've seen D'Ara illustrate articles about cooking at home, voting via mail, and bringing a Parisian holiday to life while stuck in a New York apartment. Even when the concept is complex, D'Ara streamlines things through bright hues and playful characters.

While her commissions and projects are sensationally varied, personal elements shine through each of D'Ara's offerings - in particular her penchant for travel. Time and time again, Nazaryan serves up picture-perfect depictions of adventure that make us want to hop on a plane. Or, for now, at least, flick through a travel agent guide and look forward to sunnier skies.

For another dose of D'Ara, dive in as we chat with the artist about art staples, life during lockdown, and Tierra Whack.

Describe your style in 3 words.

Colorful, Playful, Female Focused

What’s in your art toolkit?

Procreate, Endless Podcasts/Playlists, Whatever snacks are in my vicinity lol

Who was on your playlist whilst working on this project?

I've had Only Child by Tierra Whack and Come Close To Me by Romare on repeat, but in all honesty, was probably tuned into The Daily Podcast.

Who are some artists you really admire at the moment?

LRNCE by Laurence Leenaert is a huge inspiration to me, always in awe of how she's able to make simple forms so refined.

What are the positives you have come across during lockdown and how do you think it will change your point of view in the future?

100% have harnessed an appreciation for the simpler things in life. Just taking a stroll on a sunny day or sitting out and watching the sunset with a glass of wine. Also, I hope we all keep in mind the environmental toll we take on this planet and the way it was able to recoup and regenerate in our absence.

What are you looking forward to most when the lockdown is over?

Traveling, seeing my friends and family without any hesitations, eating food other people have made in a setting other than my home lol.

What’s your message to health workers right now?

You all are the real MVPs, we all salute you and are so thankful for your selfless dedication to us as a nation. I just hope you all continue to be the recipients of the same appreciation and gratitude long after this crisis subsides.

Before we emerge from lockdown (with bad haircuts and worse social skills), quarantining continues to be a journey of ups and downs - a duality D'Ara captures perfectly in her newest artwork. Made for our Rainbow of Hope series, D'Ara told us she wanted her illustration to "speak to the confinement and waves of emotional states one can go through in isolation." "But also, highlight a semblance of hope through this vast rainbow-coloured scenic view we're able to peek into." If anything close to D'Ara's scintillating, sun-kissed vision lays on the horizon, we're sure ready to ride out this rollercoaster a little longer.

Waves by D'Ara is available for purchase below - an artwork destined to turn any part of your home into a corner of tranquillity. Plus, 100% of the profits from your purchase will be donated to NHS Charities Together.

D’Ara's artwork titled Waves, with 100% profits of art print sales going to NHS Charities Together.
